Level-Up Season

Habits to Break & Habits to Build

If you’ve been feeling like it’s time for a reset—a real one—you’re not alone. We’re less than a month away from summer, almost half way through the year and officially in Level-Up Season.

It’s not about changing your entire life overnight. It’s about being honest with yourself, shedding what’s no longer working, and building habits that align with who you’re becoming. In the previous journal, I gave tips on how to organize and prepare yourself to win at life and I received such great feedback that you all loved it! So In this week’s journal, I want to talk about mental health and wellness habits because how can we expect to level-up if we aren’t taking care of our mind and body?

Let’s start with 5 wellness and mental health habits to build into your day to day that can make a massive difference—especially when practiced with intention (not perfection).

1. 💭 Break: Overthinking Everything

Build: “Done Is Better Than Perfect” You don’t need to second-guess every step. Try setting a 20-minute timer for decisions or quick tasks. Make the call. Send the email. Progress is where the power is. Making a decision—even a small one—can reduce anxiety and improve cognitive function. According to Shenhav, Botvinick, and Cohen (2023) in their study published in Neuron, the act of making decisions activates the brain’s anterior cingulate cortex and boosts a sense of control, which in turn reduces stress and anxiety levels.

2. 📱 Break: Morning Doom-Scrolling

Build: 5-Minute Morning Check-In. Before you dive into texts, social media, or emails, give yourself to yourself. Start every morning with a 30-second body scan and after a grateful thought or positive affirmation- PRO TIP (I pick one at the beginning of every week and repeat the same one every morning) You’ll be shocked how much clarity five minutes can give you and how it boosts your mood to start your day off feeling all of the happy feels. We are creating rituals that restore and regulate our nervous system, not deplete it.

3. 🧠 Break: Internalizing Everyone’s Opinions

Build: Self-Validation First. Everyone has an opinion, but not every opinion belongs to you. The next time doubt creeps in, ask yourself: “What do I know to be true about me?” Let that be your anchor. I’ve never taken the “traditional” path in my career, I’ve always pursued my passions and what I’ve known to be true about me. In the beginning, I would let others opinions about me dictate my confidence and self esteem in what I was building, they would say things like “But I don’t get it, what do you ACTUALLY do? What’s your job?” and the thing is, no one needed to know or for that matter even understand what I DID, I just needed to believe in myself enough to know that I would be successful in pursuing my passion and in what I was building. If I cared enough about what they thought about me or their opinions, I wouldn’t be where I am today, building this community! The most powerful version of you doesn’t need to prove anything to anyone, only to YOURSELF.

4. 😩 Break: Pushing Through Burnout

Build: Scheduling Recovery Like You Schedule Your Hustle. Oh man, this is a tough one for me, I constantly feel like I’m not doing enough, for myself, for my kids, for my husband, for my parents etc. One thing I have needed to learn and to remind myself is: you don’t need to “earn” rest—you require it. Adding recovery blocks to your calendar is not weakness. That’s wisdom. Have you ever been super busy, working, traveling, going to the gym, meeting up with friends, that all of a sudden, out of nowhere you get sick? That’s your body telling you to slow down, to take care of it, because as much as we THINK we can achieve it all (which we can) part of the achievement is letting ourselves rest and recover.

5. 🧘🏾‍♀️ Break: Saying “Yes” Out of Guilt

Build: Saying “No” with Love and Confidence. You have goals remember, are you saving for a vacation or to pay off your debt? Did you promise yourself you would cut out alcohol for 30 days to achieve better results at the gym? Is your vision board filled with goals that you CAN achieve but life keeps getting in the way? Not every opportunity is aligned with your current goals. Not every request or invitation deserves a “yes.” Practice this script: “Thank you for thinking of me, but I don’t have the capacity right now.” That’s grace with boundaries and it’s putting yourself and the promises you made to yourself first. Prioritize YOU, and remember, that the right people won’t leave you because of it.
